The Basics

What Are Carbon Credits — and Why Trees?

A carbon credit represents the removal or reduction of one tonne of CO₂ from the atmosphere. When your organisation plants trees through Divergent Innovation Foundation, those trees absorb CO₂ as they grow — converting it into biomass stored in wood, roots, and soil.

Each verified tree you plant generates a measurable, traceable carbon offset that your organisation can use to:

  • Meet net-zero and carbon neutrality targets
  • Satisfy ESG reporting requirements (GRI, TCFD, CDP)
  • Comply with emerging carbon disclosure regulations
  • Offset Scope 1, 2, or 3 emissions
  • Demonstrate genuine environmental commitment to stakeholders

Unlike purchasing carbon credits on a secondary market — where the money leaves Zambia and the provenance is often opaque — a Divergent partnership plants real trees in real communities, verified by GPS coordinates and photographic records you can share with your board and auditors.

🌳

Long-Lived Storage

Indigenous trees like Baobab store carbon for hundreds — even thousands — of years, far outlasting fast-growing monocultures.

📍

GPS Verified

Every tree is registered with GPS coordinates, planting date, species, and photo — giving you an auditable record.

🤝

Community Co-Benefits

Food security, shade, medicinal value, and income from indigenous fruit trees qualify as high-quality co-benefit credits.

📊

Annual Reporting

Receive a formal CO₂ sequestration report annually, suitable for ESG disclosure and board presentation.

Why Zambia

Zambia Is One of Africa's Greatest Reforestation Opportunities

Zambia loses an estimated 250,000–300,000 hectares of forest annually — one of the highest deforestation rates on the continent. This creates an enormous opportunity for verified, high-impact reforestation that earns internationally recognised carbon credits.

The country's diverse climate zones support a wide range of indigenous species — from the semi-arid Baobab heartlands of Southern Province to the miombo woodland corridors of the Copperbelt and Northern Province — giving corporate partners the ability to plant across multiple ecosystems and species types.

Zambia is also a signatory to the Paris Agreement, with a national target of restoring 8 million hectares of degraded land by 2030. Corporate partnerships with Divergent directly support this national commitment.

Our Carbon Species

Indigenous Trees We Plant for Carbon Partnerships

Each species is selected for long-term carbon storage, ecological value, and community benefit — giving corporate partners a portfolio of verified, high-quality offsets.

🌳

Baobab

Adansonia digitata
CO₂: Very High
Lifespan
500–1,000+ years
Sequestration Rate
300–500kg CO₂/year at maturity

Africa's "Tree of Life" is the continent's most iconic carbon store. A single mature Baobab can sequester hundreds of kilograms of CO₂ annually and continue doing so for a millennium. For corporate partners, a named Baobab grove represents a permanent, heritage-quality carbon investment — the kind that outlives the company itself.

Co-Benefits: Food (fruit, leaves), water storage, medicinal, cultural heritage, wildlife habitat
🌿

Tamarind

Tamarindus indica
CO₂: Medium-High
Lifespan
200–300 years
Sequestration Rate
80–150kg CO₂/year at maturity

Tamarinds are fast-establishing, long-lived trees that begin sequestering meaningful carbon within 2–3 years of planting — making them ideal for near-term carbon accounting. They thrive across Zambia's climate zones and produce nutritious fruit that communities harvest for food and trade.

Co-Benefits: Fruit (food & trade), dense shade, biodiversity corridor, soil improvement
🍊

Amarula (Marula)

Sclerocarya birrea
CO₂: Medium
Lifespan
100–150 years
Sequestration Rate
50–100kg CO₂/year at maturity

The Marula is beloved across southern Africa — its fruit is eaten by elephants, made into the famous Amarula liqueur, and forms an important income source for rural communities. As a carbon credit tree it delivers excellent nature-positive co-benefits: wildlife habitat, community income, and consistent sequestration at orchard scale.

Co-Benefits: Wildlife food (elephants, birds), community income, nature-positive biodiversity credits
🪵

Meru Oak

Vitex keniensis
CO₂: Very High
Lifespan
200–400 years
Sequestration Rate
200–400kg CO₂/year — dense hardwood

The Meru Oak is a premium hardwood native to East and Central Africa with exceptional carbon density per tree. We are currently raising $50,000 to import certified seeds and seedlings from Kenya, launching Zambia's first dedicated Meru Oak reforestation programme. Corporate partners who fund this campaign will be recognised as founding sponsors of a truly pioneering initiative.

Co-Benefits: High-value timber, exceptional carbon density, pioneer species for Zambia, founding sponsor recognition
